Morphology Description (Habit):

Bhasma is a special dosage form as mentioned in Ayurveda texts. It is an incinerated metal or mineral prepared after several rounds of processing. Properly prepared Bhasmas have been proved to work wonders in clinical practice.1 Vanga Bhasma is a Calcined preparation of purified tin, wherein the drug gets converted into its oxide form and obtains a highly reduced particle size.

The bhasma is soft to touch; it has a greyish light pink colour. The Bhasma does not produce any taste when kept on tongue, nor does it emit any odour when it was smelt.1

 

Chemistry:

Vanga Bhasma is an effective Ayurvedic medicine among various Bhasmas which are classically explained and advised specially in genitourinary disorders. XRD (x-ray diffraction) peaks of Vanga Bhasma are identified to be as Tin dioxide (SnO(2)).2

 

As per Ayurveda:

           Rasa (Taste)                 : Tasteless

           Guna (Property)           : Light, dry, sharp

           Veerya (Potency)         : Hot

           Vipaka (End Result)      : ---

 

Pharmacological Actions:

Vanga Bhasma is an effective medicine of Ayurveda used for the treatment of various disorders. Its properties are Mehaguna, Medoguna, Balya, Brahana, Chakshushya etc. It has a wide range of therapeutics specially indicated in Sarva Prameha (all types of Urinary disorders).3

The primary pharmacological actions of this Kapha balancing - Vanga Bhasma are summarized as under:

 

Central Nervous System:

i. Owing to its Rasayana properties, it is beneficial for the nervous system.

 

Endocrinal System:

i. Vanga Bhasma has been observed to efficiently control the severity of polyuria, intense thirst, blood sugar and burning sensation in hands and feet (hastapadataladaha), within a short period of treatment. During the course of treatment, no adverse effects were observed. Vanga Bhasma is an ideal drug for the treatment of Madhumeha (Diabetes mellitus).4

 

Reproductive System:

i. Its Shukrala (Semenaugmentator) and vrshya (good for testis) properties, as mentioned in Ayurvedic literature, have been clinically confirmed, wherein it was observed to have testicular regenerative potential on cadmium induced testicular degeneration in albino tats, when administered orally.5

ii. The Bhasma is useful in the management of premature ejaculation and sexual weakness.

 

Urinary System:

i. Useful in polyuria and urinary incontinence.

 

Musculoskeletal System:

i. Vanga Bhasma has been observed to be useful as an adjuvant in the management of Osteoarthritis.6.

 

Skin and Hair:

i. Due to its kledaghna property, it is useful in skin disorders.

 

Others:

i. Exhibits significant antioxidant and immunomodulatory activity.7

ii. In an animal model, Balya property of Vanga Bhasmas was tested on simple parameters of structural and functional strength. The parameters of growth and general behavior, ability to sustain stress, effect on blood, proteins and ions were included to asses Balya effect of Vanga Bhasmas on experimental animals and the result was found encouraging. Besides pharmacological activity the toxic potential of the therapy was also examined on above effects on long term and high dose as well as Histopathological changes on albino rats. No significant changes were observed on animal experiments.3

Genitourinary disorders

Premature ejaculation, nocturnal emission and sexual disorders

Other uses - General weakness, obesity, anemia, cough, cold, asthma, impaired immunity
