E-HERBARIA

  • Name : Swarna Bhasma
  • English Name :Gold Calyx
  • Scientific Name :Calcined Aurum

Morphology Description (Habit):

Since antiquity, gold is not only renowned for its beauty but for therapeutic purposes as well. Swarna Bhasma is prepared from pure Gold.

Swarna bhasma, a micro particulate used in traditional Indian medicine has been characterized as globular particles of gold with an average size of 56-57 nm.1

Chemistry:

In an experimental study, Swarna Bhasma was shown to contain 92% gold by Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy.2

Pharmacological Actions:

Gold, widely used in the modern medicine for the treatment of Rheumatoid Arthritis, is highly valued for various medicinal uses in Indian System of Medicine. Traditional gold preparations are attributed with tonic/rejuvenating and antioxidant properties. They have analgesic, immunostimulant, adaptogenic and glycogen sparing properties.3

Swarna (Gold) is well acclaimed for its therapeutic efficacy in Ayurveda texts. Both internal and external use of Swarna (Gold) has been prescribed. As a cultural practice, swarna prashan/lehan is very popular in India. In this samskara, swarna Bhasma with herbs like Vacha churna (Acorus calamus), Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) mixed with Honey and ghee is administered to the new born baby for enhancing immunity as well as for intellectual development. All ancient Ayurvedic texts and particularly Kashyap Samhita, details of Swarna lehan with it therapeutic utility is described. Swarna Prashan is done by various means including raw gold, Swarna Bhasma etc. Analysis of various experimental studies shows that Swarna Bhasma possesses immunomodulatory, free radical scavenging activity, antistress activity and analgesic activity. Toxicity study shows that chronic administration of Swarna Bhasma is non toxic as judged by various laboratory and histological parameters.4

The primary pharmacological actions of Swarna Bhasma are summarized as under:

Central Nervous System:

i. Traditional gold preparations used in Ayurveda and Unani-Tibb have been observed to exhibit anxiolytic, antidepressant and anti-cataleptic actions with wide margin of safety.5

ii. Gold preparations (Ayurvedic Swarna Bhasma and Unani Kushta Tila Kalan) have been observed to restore restraint stress-induced elevation in levels of brain catecholamines (norepinephrine, epinephrine and dopamine), 5-HT and plasma corticosterone to ner normal levels. Significant restoration of altered values to near normal levels suggest potentials for gold preparations in stress and depression.3

iii. Significant restoration of altered values of lipid peroxidase, reduced glutathione, catalase, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase, glutatione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase to near normal levels by Ayurvedic Swarna Bhasma and Unani Kushta Tila Kalan, suggest potentials for gold preparations in cerebrovascular diseases.6

Respiratory System:

i. A rejuvenating tonic in asthma, chronic bronchitis, tuberculosis and wasting diseases.

Endocrinal System:

i. Useful in the management of Diabetes mellitus.

Cardiovascular System:

i. It exhibits cardiotonic activity.

Reproductive System:

i. Useful in the management of seminal debilities.

ii. It is an excellent aphrodisisac.

Musculoskeletal System:

i. Possesses analgesic and anti-arthritic activities.

Others:

i. Exhibits anti-cancer properties.7

ii. Traditional preparations of gold have been observed to exhibit immunostimulant activity on macrophage functions in contrast to immunosuppressive effects of gold-containing drug auranofin (AN) used in modern medicine. This is an interesting observation and gives a rational basis to the claims of efficacy and safety of gold when used in calcined forms.8
