Pharmacological Actions:

Karchura is Vatakaphahara; its primary pharmacological actions are summarized as under:

Respiratory System:

i. Exhibits anti-allergic activity.2

Digestive System:

i. The Curcuma zedoaria rhizome has been used traditionally to treat gastrointestinal diseases as an aromatic stomachic drug, and this is currently used to treat alcohol-induced loss of appetite and nausea in Japan. It has been observed that the protective effect of the C. zedoaria extract on drunkenness might be due to an active substance, curcumenone, and decreases in the elevation of blood alcohol concentrations through increased liver alcohol dehydrogenase activity.3

i. The essential oil has the antimicrobial activity against some of Gram- positive and negative pathogenic microorganisms and the components of the extract lead to the apoptosis of human cancer cell line.4

ii. Possesses significant antibacterial and antifungal activities.5

iii. Overproduction of prostaglandins has been considered in mediation of inflammation and carcinogenic process. On this line, the inhibitors of prostaglandin biosynthetic enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX) have played a role of anti-inflammatory and cancer chemopreventive agents. Curdione, an active component of Shati, helps inhibit overproduction of prostaglandin E2.6

iv. Shati may play important roles in the inhibition of cancer metastasis.7

v. Exhibits considerable anti-inflammatory activity.8
